What Kind of Fantasy Sports Player Are You?

April 28th 2011 23:24
: It Takes All Kinds...
If you're reading this blog, or any sports blog for that matter, chances are extremely high that you - at the very least - know what fantasy sports are. Chances are also pretty high that you actively participate in such leagues. Perhaps many. At once.

What are the levels of fantasy sports player? What kind are you? Below I'll try to categorize the 'levels' of fantasy players. The levels I'm going to use are, admittedly, VERY basic - and many variations and degrees can exist within any of the three levels.

The Rookies
This guy typically know enough about sports to play in a fantasy league - but for some reason or another - they just haven't gotten into it. Then they get the call - "Hey man, we had a guy drop out last minute, can you fill this spot in the league?" Usually the call comes from a good buddy, so naturally, the rookie says yes and jumps into a world of something he thought he knew enough about. Turns out he was way wrong. He's in over his head, makes questionable - if not flat out stupid - moves. Forgets to set his lineup. The list of rookie mistakes goes on and on.

Overall, the rookie gets the hang of it towards the end of the season - he may even fall in love with it - which leads us to...

The Over-Committed
This guy can't just be in one league per season. He's in 15. He loves fantasy sports - and he loves to let you know about it. These are simply the worst type of fantasy players there are. He has so-and-so on his other team, or his other team won by this much last week... etc, etc. This guy is also the same guy that fills out 20 NCAA brackets each year - then brags about how well one of his brackets is doing - when 19 others are completely trashed. Even the blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes man.

Staying in this level is tough - it's inevitably a high stress level... soon the Over-Committed move on up to...

The Grad
This guy has progressed through bits and pieces of both the Rookie level and the Over-Committed level. He's passed that now. He does one league per sports year (not that he doesn't want to play more - he's tired of the headache of keeping his teams straight). The Grad thinks through all of his moves (sometimes to his determent), and usually finishes in the top of any league he plays in.

Now, as mentioned, those are three very, very basic levels of fantasy player. And recently, I've found, there exists an even higher level of player for those wanting a little something different. If you think that's you - read below and give them a try - it might be just what you're missing.

Football, Baseball, Basketball - all of it. Live drafts, Dynasty, Historical and Sim Leagues. Want Babe Ruth as your cleanup, Nolan Ryan as your ace and Mariano Rivera as your closer? This is your spot. Give any season a free trial and I promise you'll never want to go back to 'regular' fantasy leagues again.

This site has a few leagues - but by far it's best is the HR Derby. Pick 11 guys to fit the yearly salary cap - most HR's wins. Simple, but the hardest thing you've ever done - all at the same time. This site isn't mainstream - so if you go to join, tell them we sent you in your email request!
