Week 8 picks

October 30th 2011 01:00
: Happy Halloween!!
Indy @ Tennessee

Here's how bad the quarterbacks were across the board last week. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 104 yards. Curtis Painter threw for 67 yards. In the shiny new football statistic, QBR, there were still 9 quarterbacks worse than both those guys. 9! And, yes, Whitehurst was one of them. As for this game, no way the Colts chance losing the Luck sweepstakes by accidently winning on the road.
Titans 26-9

New Orleans @ St. Louis

The Saints are averaging 34 points a game, the Rams are averaging 9. The Saints scored more points last week (62) than the Rams have scored all season (56). The Saints are starting Drew Brees, the Rams are starting A.J. Feeley. I don't know about this one guys.
Saints 34-9

Miami @ NY Giants

Last week Miami gave up 15 points in the final 2:44 to go from a sure win to what would ultimately become an overtime loss. The question is, does that meltdown hurt or help Tony Sparano? Had he won the game and taken a backseat in the Luck sweepstakes, would they have fired him on the spot? This, of course, is assuming that Matt Moore isn't the QB of the future for the Dolphins.
Giants 31-14

Minnesota @ Carolina

Say what you want about a game featuring a total of 3 wins by both teams, I'm legitimately excited about a showdown between what might turn out to be the best two quarterbacks in last year's draft. Did you know that the Panthers have already scored more touchdowns than they did all of last season? And that Newton has already passed for over 2100 yards? Also shocking, the Vikings still have McNabb listed as a living person on their roster, despite all signs pointing to the contrary. I say stick with the number one overall pick in the battle of the rookies.
Panthers 35-28

Arizona @ Baltimore

Thanks to the Ravens, the Seahawks held week 7's "least inspired effort" award for barely 24 hours. Seattle might have waited until the 2nd half to visit the red zone for the first time, but the Ravens didn't even have a first down until the 8 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. Well done Baltimore (yes, I lost money on the game). Meanwhile, the Cardinals are terrible. You think Larry Fitzgerald and Adrian Peterson ever get together on the Monday after a game and console each other about their newly signed extensions? How soon before either one pulls a Barry Sanders and abruptly retires?
Ravens 26-10

Jacksonville @ Houston

Baltimore's quest to take away my money aside, the Jags really have looked pretty decent these last few weeks. While they might seem like a trendy upset pick here, remember that their next two games are against Indy and Cleveland. I think they have an excellent chance to win those games, and the thought of this Jacksonville team winning 3 games in a row seems a little far-fetched.
Texans 31-17

Washington @ Buffalo

It's kind of a bummer that the Bills and the Lions are both sliding a bit these last couple weeks. Two snake bitten franchises starting undefeated was exciting; two snake bitten franchises being undefeated for a while and then missing the playoffs would be a travesty. Speaking of snake bitten, the Bills have been hit with a bunch of injuries and are playing this "home game" in Toronto, where they have yet to win. At least they inked their over performing quarterback to a 6-year extension because, if we know anything, it's that athletes try harder with financial security (I'm looking at you Chris Johnson). Still, despite all of that, I think the Bills bounce back here. Mainly because I'm rooting for them too.
Bills 28-22

Detroit @ Denver

Like anyone should pick against Tebow. Look for a stat line that's somewhere around 6-17, 61 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 rushing TD. Followed by Detroit wondering how they lost the game.
Broncos 17-14

New England @ Pittsburgh

I'm not sold on the Stealers yet, especially after two straight subpar performances against inferior teams. Plus, the Patriots have won 6 of 7 in Pittsburgh and a crappy defense almost always beats a crappy offensive line. Wonder how Rob Gronkowski will celebrate...
Patriots 35-24

Cleveland @ San Francisco

There should be a game show where they give the contestants a name and then ask them if that name is of a one-time word leader or a member of the Cleveland Browns. "I follow the NFL; I think I would have heard of Mohamed Massaquoi. That has to be a world leader. Wrong again?! Ok, I can get this next one. Montario Hardesty? Boy..."
Niners 27-9

Cincinatti @ Seattle

Speaking of the Browns, that Cleveland-Seattle game might be the worst game of the year. Actually, with more than half the season still to play, I'm going on a limb and saying it will be. McCoy had a passer rating of 59.0, which was WAY better than Whitehurst at 35.0. The two teams combined for 15 penalties and 116 penalty yards. The red zone was only seen 3 times for the whole game, and all 3 visits yielded 0 touchdowns. Basically, it was the NFL's version of Bucky Larson. Did you know that the Seahawks are number one in rushing defense? Did you also know Seattle's offense still hasn't reached 100 points scored for the season? Yep. Still, it's a home game and Dalton is a rookie.
Hawks 17-13

Dallas @ Philly

Vick; who has as many turnovers as touchdowns; versus Romo; who spends half of each game trying to win and half of each game trying to lose. Highly enjoyable watching these two teams struggle, isn't it?
Eagles 26-24

San Diego @ Kansas City

The Chiefs lost their first two games by a combined score of 84-10, and now find themselves with a chance to by tied for first in the AFC West. They face a team they always play tough, at home, against a quarterback with more picks than touchdowns and against a defense that just lost their best linebacker. On Monday night. This game reeks of an upset.
Chiefs (in an upset!) 24-23

Quick side note:
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my complete lack of knowledge or interest in the new crop of sitcoms out there. I say new, but really, almost any sitcom over the last 7 or so years. This prompted a few "Hey, you should watch (fill in show here). It's really (good, edgy, etc.) and (some actress) is really hot" comments and texts. So, starting next week, I will be watching these said sitcoms and writing a running diary of the show as it happens. We'll be starting with something called "Big Bang Theory". Fully prepared for this undertaking, I don't know when that show is on or if it is even still airing (if it's not, we will move to the second show on the list, "2 Broke Girls"), but if and when it is on, I'll have the diary up the next day. Until then, Happy Halloween all!

Last week: 7-6
Season: 70-33
