Some thoughts and some picks
Some thoughts about week we just had in the sports world:
Felix won the Cy Young. I was giddy all day Thursday. As a Seattle fan, you get used to disappointment. As meaningless as Gold Gloves have become, I desperately wanted Gutierrez to win one last year. Even more than I wanted Felix to win the Cy Young last year. Gutierrez was a hidden gem, a defensive statistical anomaly. He had put together the greatest defensive season ever. Every stat junkie raved about him and I watched every game in awe of how graceful he looked running down every fly ball within 100 feet of him. Amazing to see day after day. A gold glove last year would have meant that people were paying attention, that his talents weren't being wasted on me and the few other diehard fans watching him day in, day out. Well he didn't win because; well, because nobody was paying attention.
So that's how I felt this year with Felix. As more and more people talked about how he should win, since he was better in every category except wins, I started to gain hope that they would get it right this year. And they did. They even gave Gutierrez a Gold Glove to boot. Grienke should have won last year, Felix should have won this year, both did and I couldn't be happier. It looks like the writers are starting to get these things right. Except for that AL SS Gold Glove.
Locker's last home game was also on Thursday (Thursday was a really good day). I got this text from Jesse:
"The black uniforms piss me off. Fans/Crowd? Sure, wear black. Players? Show some team pride. Respect the history of your program. Especially on national TV. Purple and Gold=UW. Not black. We're not Oregon."
Couldn't agree more, ditch the black unis. We also chatted about how Locker is now slotted to go around 17th in next year's draft, as opposed to 1st overall in last year's draft. 17th should be right around where the Hawks pick. Hmmmm...
Tiger Woods said he is an "infinitely happier man". Well, yeah, of course. He's not married anymore.
Boise State has not trailed in a football game since the 4th quarter in week 1. They've dropped in the rankings since then. The NCAA continues to suck at what they do.
Things probably happened in the NBA, but I still haven't watched a non-playoff game in 3 years so I have no idea what they were. Let's get to the picks...
Chicago@Miami
I think 3rd-string QB Thigpen is going to be overwhelmed in this game. I don't see him throwing more than 187 yards. Granted that will probably be more than Cutler, who will probably throw for around 156 yards (and almost certainly a pick), but the Bears will probably still win this one. As a matter of fact, I don't think the Dolphins will even score.
Bears 16-0
Buffalo@Cincinnatti
Congrats to Bills fans for winning a game. I used to have a friend who was a Bills fan and he would have loved that game if he were still with us. Sadly, he got married. Speaking of that game, have we gotten word why Hill thought it would be best to throw the game-tying 2-pt conversion a few rows deep into the stands as opposed to trying to avoid the sack? Maybe that's why Detroit has lost 25 straight road games. Anyways, I'm glad the Bills won but I think they come up short against the other really horrible team.
Bengals 24-20
Detroit@Dallas
Yeah, as mentioned above, 25 straight losses on the road. Let's ride that streak, shall we? That way, we can have one more week of hearing about how Jason Garrett has turned this Cowboy team around! Did you know they still have four division games left? If they sweep those, they might sneak into the playoffs! OMG! (Seriously, I know that sports radio and TV is required to talk about the Cowboys at some point during any football discussion, but they've won 2 games. Just say they suck and go on to the next subject. I'm begging you.)
Cowboys 31-19
Washington@Tennessee
Hidden in that $80 million deal that McNabb got was the fact that they can still cut him after this season and only pay around $3.5 million. So look for him to only make around $3.5 million. Speaking of which, how predictable was it that he would lay a stinkbomb on national television a few hours after signing that contract? Usually when a player signs a big extension, we have to wait until the next season to watch him play half-heartedly. The Redskins were able to make everything happen in a few short hours. Impressive.
Titans 26-12
Arizona@Kansas City
The Chiefs are in a tailspin, losing 4 of their last 6 (and in one of those wins they had to go to overtime to beat Buffalo). Was I the only one that thought Chiefs Coach Todd Haley came off just a little whiney when he yelled at the Denver coach after the game? They lost by 20, and I don't remember at any point during the game thinking the Broncos were running up the score. By the way, the Chiefs beat the Niners by 21 and the Jags by 22. Stones and glass houses Todd. Luckily, Kansas City gets an awful Cardinals team to help them back on track before coming to Seattle.
Chiefs 45-20, because Todd doesn't seem to mind running up the score...
Green Bay@Minnesota
The Corpse of Brett Favre (C.o.B.F) gets his old team in a key divisional matchup! Simmons wrote about how he can't count out any NFC team until they reach 8 losses because 9-7 might get a wild card. I completely agree, and having said that, the Vikings season is over. Although I am excited to see who ends up with the most picks this season, C.o.B.F or Cutler. I have Cutler pulling it out but it'll be exciting down the stretch!
Packers 35-20
Houston@N.Y Jets
I agree that batting the ball down on a Hail Mary is the correct play, but what if you're a couple yards from the back of the endzone, as that Texan DB was at the end of the game? Wouldn't batting the ball behind you, ensuring it goes out of bounds, be the right move? Especially when, like last Sunday, there's no one behind you? Whatever, I've always joked that the Texans are destined to always be 1 game above or below .500 and things like that happen when destiny's involved.
Jets 20-17 (in OT!)
Oakland@Pittsburgh
Did you know the Oakland Raiders are the number one offensive team in the NFL? And, for once, that doesn't have anything to do with their fans? I was shocked too. A lot of people have this as a chic upset pick, and as much as I would love for that to happen, eh...
Stealers 27-14
Baltimore@Carolina
I finally looked it up. T.J. Houshmandzadeh has 13 catches for 176 yards. He has the same number of catches as the Raven's fullback. Insane. On the other side of the field, Steve Smith is at 30 catches for the season, but only 365 yards (and only 2 TD!). Isn't one of these two due for a blowup? Can we wager on this?
Ravens 28-10
Cleveland@Jacksonville
Crushing loss for the Browns last week but I've always said, if you're driving in overtime but fumble the ball on the other team's 30 yard line and then later let their receiver break 3 tackles on a 5 yard slant with like a minute to go, you're probably going to lose. The Jags meanwhile are quietly having an ok season and if they can get a win here, they'll be 6-4 on the season with 3 of their last 6 against divisional opponents.
Jags 29-22
Atlanta@St. Louis
Big win for the Falcons last week, even though Roddy White could have been charged with aggravated assault against Josh Wilson on that winning touchdown catch. Whatever, White is currently the best receiver in football and not getting called for offensive PI cements it. Somehow the Rams are 4-1 at home. Hang on, let's look at their schedule. Stay there. It's coming up right now. Loading. Loading. Almost. Here it is. Redskins, Seahawks, Chargers and Panthers. Figured it was 4 teams like that. They're about to be 4-2 at home.
Falcons 26-17
Tampa Bay@San Francisco
I was watching Inside the NFL and they had Mike Williams (Tampa Bay WR) miked up during the game. At the end of the highlights, an alert popped up on my computer that he had been arrested for a DUI. That was kind of surreal. Not to worry, he'll play Sunday because the NFL hates immediately suspending DUI arrests. Anyways, I don't think it would matter either way; the Bucs will get up for this game.
Bucs 21-13
Indianapolis@New England
I'm shocked that this game isn't on Sunday or Monday night. I see the Patriots winning this, but did I mention the Colts have put 12 players on injured reserve already? It reminds me of that one season when the Hawks had used something like 9 WR through the first 7 weeks. I don't remember us having the same success the Colts have been having though.
Patriots 35-28
N.Y Giants@Philadelphia
Of the 11 Sunday Night Football games this season, 7 have involved the NFC East. Of the other 4, 2 involved the Stealers, one was C.o.B.F returning to Lambeau and one was an AFC East game between the Jets and Dolphins. Screw you NBC.
Eagles 31-28
Denver@San Diego
Denver is 30th in rushing yards and 32nd in opponents rushing yards. I'm almost certain that's not good for an NFL team. At least they'll get to broadcast their skills on national television. I'm rooting for them, but this might be a long game on the road.
Chargers 42-24
Seattle@New Orleans
Wooft. Let's try to stay optimistic. Hey, our next two games are at home against the Chiefs and Panthers! Those are winnable! Okung is back! If he's going to play once every 4 games, this is one we need him in! It'll be freezing in Montana this weekend, all the more reasons to stay indoors, sip a beer and watch the Seahawks! See, positive! Go Blue!
Saints A lot-A little

I mean, since the award is "best pitcher", not "pitcher on the best team".
