The Super 16

If you're a sports fan, most notably, a college football fan, then you've no doubt heard about the probable expansion of the Pac-10. Every day that passes, it looks more and more like the Pac-10 is going to be gaining some real big names in college football. Colorado is already signed on, and reports from various sports news sites are saying that Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech are soon to follow (perhaps as soon as Friday). The LA Times is reporting that Texas has already informed their coaches that they're in the Pac-10. According to the same paper, Nebraska is expected to announce their move to the Big Ten, which is really the key to making all of this happen.
Now, what does it mean for the current teams in the Pac-10 with all these big programs now coming on board? With me living in Eastern WA, I'm obviously a huge WSU fan. Unfortunately, they're going on year 7 without a winning record, and adding the biggest names from the Big 12 isn't going to help their cause at all. According to the multiple sports sites such as Fox and ESPN, the Pac-10 would split into two divisions starting with the 2012 season. The west division would be a mirror of the old Pac-8 configuration: USC, UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Oregon St., Washington, and Washington State. The east division you ask? Arizona, Arizona St., Texas, Oklahoma, etc...
Now, being familiar with the state of WA sports currently, it's definitely not looking good for fans of the Huskies or Cougars. And it's not looking good for a real long time. I'm 95% sure that we can look forward to Texas or Oklahoma being the champions of the "Super 16" for a really long time. Just another dagger in the hearts of NW sports fans.

It makes more geographical sense for them to join those respective conferences I think. The main reason for the conference shake up boils down to money - and I don't see Oklahoma or Texas wanting to spend all the money on travel to the PAC-10 sites, when they can stay "closer to home" and still play in a competitive conference.
Not to mention the Rose Bowl is still Pac-10 champ vs. Big-10 champ, is it not? So we'll probably still see Texas vs. UW next year anyway...
