Seattle Mariner 1st Half Report Card
July 8th 2010 21:59
As we are one 4-game series against the New York Yankees away from the All-Star break - let's recap the Mariners season thus far.
Record: 34-50, 16 games behind AL West leading Texas. 20-21 at home and 14-29 on the road. Currently 3-7 out of the last 10 games.
Offense
Currently ranked #27 in team batting average with .239 - only ahead of Toronto (.238), Houston (.237) and Pittsburgh (.235). Only Ichiro (.324) is batting above .266.
Currently ranked #29 in runs scored with 290 - 18 in front of Pittsburgh (272), 11 back of Baltimore and Houston (301), but 53 runs behind #26 Chicago Cubs (343)
Currently ranked #28 in home runs with 55 - only ahead of Pittsburgh (53) and Oakland (52). The top two teams, Toronto (125) and Boston (112) have them more than doubled.
Currently ranked #27 in OBP with a .309.
Currently ranked #29 in RBI with 278 - only ahead of Pittsburgh (263).
Currently ranked #29 in hits with 670 - Ichiro accounts for 17% of the total hits with 112.
Currently ranked #4 in stolen bases with 77 (with only 19 CS for an 80.2% success rate).
Currently ranked #30 in extra base hits with 186.
Pitching
Currently ranked #11 in ERA with 3.93.
Currently ranked #2 in complete games with 8 (Cliff Lee - 5).
Currently ranked #26 in strikeouts with 522 - Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee account for 40% of the total strikeouts (122, 89).
Currently ranked #3 in OBA with .313.
Currently ranked #5 in wild pitches with 37 (and leading the league in passed balls with 11).
Overall, I'd say the shine of the Wakamatsu/Zduriencik regime is starting to wear a little thin. Most of the moves that Zduriencik made this year have failed to pay out, and Wakamatsu has cost the team more than a handful of losses with his decision making (or lack thereof) on the field. I believe that Zduriencik is safe for another 2 or 3 years - as the task of cleaning up after Bavasi (who barely remains in the league as a talent scout for the Reds) was not expected to be quick or easy. That being said - I think that these next 2 and a half months will determine how close Wakamatsu's feet get to the fire this offseason.
