Opening Act
Hello everyone, and welcome to my new weekly column here on Unsportsman. As you may or may not know from some of my past posts, I'm the only writer that resides on the east side of the state, in Spokane. With that being said, I'll be covering the usual major teams in the state and at times, select stories on teams from this side of the state. Also putting a unique spin on this will be you, the readers. Each week I'm going to ask for one additional team that someone is interested in hearing some news about, then I'll do my best to dig up some dirt on said team. So with that, let's get started!
First up, we got none other than our beloved 6-9 Seattle Seahawks. Boy, oh boy, where do I start with them? They head into their first primetime matchup since 2008 with the chance to make NFL history. Sorry to break it to them, but I wouldn't want to be known as the first team with a losing record to win their division, but that's exactly what can happen Sunday night at Qwest.
Coaches said that knowing the Tampa Bay game was meaningless for them by the time the game started had no bearing on their performance, or Hasselbeck's "unusual" injury. I call BS on that. I wouldn't put it past Carroll or Hasselbeck to fake an injury so that Carroll can get a look at what Whitehurst has to offer while at the same time resting Hasselbeck up for the game that matters.
So it all comes down to Sunday night, Rams @ Seahawks, for all the division marbles. I'm actually sorry that America has to be subjected to the terrible play that is sure to happen next weekend. That's no way to get over a New Year's weekend hangover.
Now comes the Mariners. Not much going on right now with them. However they did deal Rob Johnson to the Padres for future considerations or cash. Hmm, what else? Oh, "The Hyphen" is in intensive MMA training with Jay Glazer. And he's now a Houston Astro. Other than that, nothing much to report there.
Let's move on to the Huskies of UW. A lot more going on there at this time of year than there has been for a while. Jake Locker and Co. are preparing to face Nebraska in a Holiday Bowl matchup that is sure to be high scoring. For one side anyway. Ugly. That will most likely be the only way to describe what happens to them on Dec. 30th.
Meanwhile, the men's basketball team is preparing for the start of conference play after what was an underwhelming non-conference slate for the most part. However, I believe that UW should have only minimal problems taking the Pac-10 title this year and earning the auto-bid to the big dance.
Cougs! Don't worry, they are my team in football, but that is as excited as I'll get about them for quite some time. Not a lot going on with the Cougs football team right now, as every fan expected. Paul Wulff will be allowed one more year to try and show more than a one game improvement. We'll finally get to see how his recruits are progressing. I still think they're most likely 2-3 years away from a bowl game, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Tuel can possibly elevate to the top passer in the Pac-12 next year if Luck decides to enter the NFL Draft. Wilson will improve even more as a receiver and be a dangerous weapon for the Cougs offense. Not much more to say on that right now.
As for the men's basketball team, they've had a great start this season, knocking off Gonzaga was huge for them. They then got to the championship game in the Diamond Head tourney in Hawaii by beating #15 Baylor, before falling hard to Butler. Not quite sure what to make of this team, but I do believe they could make a lot of noise in the Pac-10 this year, and they'll be a tough out for anyone.
Finally, I'd like to end this column with my hometown team, Gonzaga. The men's basketball team played a brutally tough schedule to open the year, and that's just how Mark Few likes it, no matter what the outcome. I have to admit, this was the worst that the Zags had looked for almost a whole decade. However, they really turned it around by beating then #9 Baylor down in Dallas, TX. Then they followed that up with a win over tournament regular Xavier. And that was without their leading scorer, and senior guard, Steven Gray. As always, they have very talented recruits coming in to contribute. Conference play is upcoming, and the Zags could have their hands full with Portland and St. Mary's playing very well. Should be exciting.
And that's Washington Sports Weekly, coming to you no later than Wednesday night every week here on Unsportsman. Don't forget to comment and leave your choice for a team you would like to see recognized and reported on. Thanks for reading!
