Fantasy Football Preview
August 25th 2010 22:14
I fought with myself over and over about how exactly to tie in the "local" flavor when I decided I wanted to do a fantasy football preview article. But then, as I was perusing the grocery store magazine rack and saw the cover of a particular "expert" fantasy magazine that featured a inset photo of Pete Carroll and the cover image of none other than Patrick Kearney - underlined by the text: "Seattle's New Reign: Under Peter Carroll, Patrick Kearney and the Seahawks are ready to rumble" - I had my idea. I'd simply write the article and merely point out that I had to try hard - really hard - to even get a single Seahawk player into the rankings anywhere.
Now, back to that magazine for a minute before I begin... I get that these articles/magazines quickly become "old" or "out-of-date" and that printed material on such a fast paced topic is rarely a good idea (kudos, however, to those of you that grab any old fantasy magazine off the shelf the night before the draft - or on your way to the draft and still manage to fill a decent roster). I also understand the need to be the 1st on the shelf - so you have to sacrifice by knowing some info you write will be inaccurate in a few months. But, Patrick Kearney hasn't been a factor on the football field since about 2007 - and oh yeah, he is no longer in the league. Who knows, maybe it was a marketing ploy to get people to pick up the magazine - I know I sure did. I just as quickly put it down, however, after I flipped to the team preview for the Seahawks (who, remember, were "ready to rumble") and found that they had been picked by these "experts" to finish 4th in the NFC West. I didn't even get to read the reason they picked LenDale White as the Seahawks "Draft Stock Riser", or how they justified Pete Carroll, Charlie Whitehurst, and Chris Clemons as among their "Key Additions".
Well, I'll jump right into my rankings with the disclaimer that this is meant to be brief and without much explanation as to why I ranked where I did - or even so much as telling you which format this is for. Quite frankly, I know of about 8 different draft formats; 19 different scoring systems; and 26 different sets of rules. I just went general and intended for you to take it as that and mold your own settings/stats/systems into the mix as you see fit. Once again, please take special note to the number of Seahawk players that appear in my rankings.

(I've excluded Kickers and Defenses - as those typically don't make or break a fantasy season - and are usually picked within the last few rounds of a draft as is)
For those of you that made it this far - and have been counting Seahawks - I'll give you the answer now: ZERO. I tried, I swear. The closest Seahawk I could get was TE John Carlson, but with Hasselbeck's injuries and lack of depth behind him combined with the offensive line issues - I couldn't justify bumping him up high enough and still be taken somewhat serious as an "expert". But hey - it could be worse. Just ask the editors of that magazine I talked about earlier.
