Ex-Seattle Player of the Week Award
July 28th 2010 20:52
UnSportsman is proud to unveil a new weekly post and a contest!!
From week to week - or whenever you feel the need - drop us a name of an ex-Seattle player you would like to nominate for this prestigious award. The beauty of this award is that there are literally 100's of names to choose from! And they all twist that knife in the back just as hard!
We here at UnSportsman wouldn't feel quite right if we asked you to do something (send us submissions, tell your friends about us, and tell them to read our blog, send us submissions, and then tell their friends about us, repeat, and repeat, etc.) without offering you something in return. So here it is: for each submission that we use as our Ex-Seattle Player of the Week Award winner - we'll enter you into a drawing for either a pair of Mariners 4-game flex pack tickets - OR - a pair of tickets to a Seahawks game.* Your choice! In fact, I'll give you all reading this now a headstart - for every person you refer to this site that submits a winning name - we'll throw your name in the hat as well!
So, without any further ado - I'd like to present to you, the inaugural Ex-Seattle Player of the Week Award...
Miguel Batista, Washington Nationals
W, 5.0 innings pitched, 83 pitches (48 strikes), 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk, 6 k's.
That's a quality start and a decent line for sure. But what solidifies him as this week's winner is the circumstances in which he got the starting nod. A crowd of over 40,000 fans had just about all found their seats and were ready to watch Stephen Strasburg take the mound - when they noticed Batista trot out onto the field. Strasburg was a (very) last minute scratch when he couldn't get warm (diagnosis: shoulder inflammation) - and Batista literally had less than 10 minutes to warm up.
Was he disheartened by the round of boo's he received after being announced as the starter? Not really, he even went so far as to compare himself to Miss Iowa, "Imagine if you go there to see Miss Universe and you end up having Miss Iowa. You might get those kind of boos."
So, while Batista saved the day for 40,000 in Washington - we here in Seattle, Washington, got to watch Ryan Rowland-Smith pitch just about as well as I'd imagine Miss Iowa would have...
Congrats, Miguel Batista, you're our inaugural Ex-Seattle Player of the Week!
Update: Apparently Miss Iowa, Katherine Connors, will be throwing out the first pitch at a Nationals game due to Batista's comments. No word on if she'll be given time to warm up, or if Batista will have to throw it out for her.
Send in those submissions for next week and until then - check back with us often for updates, rumblings and grumblings!
*Submissions now through March of 2011 will be eligible for 2011 tickets. Current drawing will be held in March of 2011. To be eligible to win, all entries must be submitted with full contact information (name, email, address, phone number). Drawing and submissions will reset on an annual basis. In the case of multiple submissions of a award winner's name - we'll take the timestamp of submission as the tie-breaker, so don't waste any time getting us your submissions!
