Over as Quickly as it Started?
Welcome to the 2011 Baseball Season!
Boy that was fun for us Seattle Mariner baseball fans! Here's to next year!
Of course, I kid. But only slightly. After 9 games in the books, the Seattle Mariners are sitting a stellar 6 games back in the AL West. Granted, Texas is off to a 8-1 start, but it's nice to know that NO OTHER TEAM IN MARINERS HISTORY has started a season and gotten this far back in the standings THIS QUICKLY (the feat of 6 games back after 10 was next on this list, completed by your 1981 Seattle Mariner squad). It's unreal. Though, I can't say it wasn't something that is completely out of the blue. We should have all seen it coming. Did they upgrade ANYWHERE from last year? Nope. I'd even say the bullpen has regressed, if anything. Starting pitching? Felix is Felix - but then what? If we were seriously counting on Erik Bedard, we might as well have held open tryouts for the first 20,000 fans for the home opener (I bet that would have helped sell out the game prior to 5 minutes before game time).
(**Please note I didn't talk about the offense in that last paragraph, well, because there is none.)
Not only are they horrible on the field after 9 games. They are IMPLODING off the field this early as well...
Examples:
Milton Bradley. Not that we needed to know this guy was a complete psycho, but the dude has resorted to wearing ear plugs DURING HOME GAMES to avoid hearing hecklers. I can't make this up.
Jack Wilson vs. Eric Wedge. Jack didn't come out for the later innings of a game. Story from Wedge in the post-game interview was that Jack was 'hazy' and he thought it was best to pull him out. End of story, right? Nope. Jack Wilson comes out and basically calls his manager a liar and said he was pulled by Wedge. Well, old Wedge didn't take this now public knowledge well, so he decided to go public with his own version - Jack Wilson pulled himself out, unknown to the manager, and the only reason Wedge said otherwise in the original post-game interview was to 'protect a veteran player'... So much for a united club house.
Chone Figgins. This guy. As a Mariners fan, I went so far as to defend him last year - based solely on the fact that, he and the Angels, simply killed us when he was their leadoff. We couldn't get the guy out, and he seemed to be a clubhouse leader. Well, turns out that was more a product of the Mariners sucking than Figgins being all that. Let me put this as plain and simple as I can... the guy is a gigantic douchebag. Need proof? Click here. Basically, he's off to a crappy start (again), and when asked about some things every baseball reporter would ask - he acts like a little child. If I was there, the next "dumb question" I would ask Mr. Figgins would have been "Why are we paying you, and how much?" (Probably would have thrown in some expletives as well, prior to throwing my recorder in his face as I got up and walked away.)
Look, I know it's way early. But this is a sad and worn out song the Mariners (under the same head honchos) are singing. We've seen it before. Players have come and gone. Same with managers. Makes you wonder what really needs to change...
Will I still watch/go to Mariner games? Sure. If Felix is pitching.
It's going to be a long season folks. Buckle up.
